Student Life
Colchester Institute has a relaxed, informal atmosphere. The student population is diverse and increasingly popular with international and mature students. The Student Union is based at the Colchester campus and is represented at Clacton. At Colchester there is a newly refurbished Common Room with pool tables, table football, video games and unrestricted Internet access. There is a Quiet Common Room where students can study. This is also the base for many clubs and societies (e.g. movie club, art and drama society, pool club, football club, the DJ society, Christian Union). Colchester campus has a new multi-gym and a Student Union bar is being planned.
The Local Area
Colchester is a great town in which to live and study. Once the Roman capital of Britain, and Britain's oldest recorded town, Colchester is now the acknowledged cultural capital of Essex.
The town itself is a unique blend of ancient and modern with its Norman castle and museums, alongside clubs, pubs and restaurants, a multi-screen cinema and multi-million pound sports and leisure centre.

Colchester Institute degree programmes are validated by the University of Essex, which was established in 1965 and is now one of the UK's leading academic institutions. Essex is ranked in the UK top ten for its research excellence, with many of the academic departments at the forefront of research in their field. The University is also ranked seventh nationally for teaching.
